Open Question: Considering buying a 1974 Chevrolet pickup, good idea?

I realize it is old but I am in dire need of transportation. He's selling it for 800 obo, so I'm gonna try for $600 and go from there. He says it was his work truck until he upgraded, and then he let it sit for a year. He said it starts up and runs fine after charging the battery. Has 305 engine from an 86 comaro and a 4 barrel quad jet carb. I'm not really sure if thats good or not. Advice for when I go to look at the truck? I won't be taking it on any long trips.
