Open Question: Valve clearance 69 c-10 inline 6?

6 September 2010, 7:20 pm

hey there folks. I have a 69 Chevrolet c-10 fleet-side with an in-line 6. i'm told that there is an adjustment that needs to be made to the valve train, requiring the removal of the two push-rod covers. i'm also told that this adjustment requires specs for intake and exhaust, and also has different specs for hot and cold. I have a Haynes manual but that might as well be a book of Charmin TP. what is the procedure called? and what (most importantly) are the recommended specs for my engine? its the 4.8L in-line 6. also, don't i need to remove the valve cover and make an adjustment(s) to the rocker arms? if so what are the recommended specs, or where can i find such information? (tried looking for Chilton's manuals with my application but unfortunately i was unable to find anything). my truck sat outside my neighbors house for a few years before i acquired it. that's when my friend who's been a mechanic for 20 some odd years said " oh yeah you just need to adjust your valve clearance, find the specs and ill do it for you" also, when i get to about 2,500 + rpm, i can distinctly hear the valve train just clattering like no tomorrow. any help is appreciated. i'm reaaaaaaallly not wanting to hafta put in new lifters, push-rods, and a cam... please help me before i destroy my engine....
